Linotyl Dry Syrup is an oral antibiotic formulation containing cefpodoxime proxetil, intended for the treatment of various bacterial infections in children. It is supplied as a powder for reconstitution into an orange-flavored suspension.
Composition (per 5 mL after reconstitution):
Cefpodoxime Proxetil IP equivalent to Cefpodoxime 50 mg – A third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death.
Excipients q.s. – Inactive ingredients that stabilize and flavor the suspension.
Uses (Indications):
Respiratory tract infections (including bronchitis, pneumonia)
Ear, nose, and throat infections (otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis)
Skin and soft tissue infections
Urinary tract infections
Mechanism of Action:
Cefpodoxime binds to bacterial penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), blocking peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall, causing structural weakness and eventual cell lysis. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: Typically not used in dry syrup form; adult dose in tablet form is 100–200 mg every 12 hours.
Pediatrics: Commonly 5 mg/kg every 12 hours, or as directed by physician.
Administer after reconstitution with 20 mL sterile water. Shake well before each use.
After reconstitution, store in the refrigerator (2–8°C). Do not freeze.
Side Effects:
Diarrhea
Nausea or vomiting
Abdominal pain
Rash or itching
Headache
Rare: allergic reactions, Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea
Precautions:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins.
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose adjustment may be required).
Monitor for signs of allergic reaction, especially in patients with history of beta-lactam allergy.
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed; consult physician.
Caution in lactating women as small amounts may pass into breast milk.
